6 ITEMS THAT EVERY DOG OWNER SHOULD HAVE

Bringing home a dog usually means stocking your home with all of the must-haves—dishes, food, bedding, toys, and all of the other usual suspects. What they don’t tell you when you’re picking up your furry friend is about all of the helpful items that will make life easier for both you and your dog. From key items for clean-up to indispensable products that you won’t be able to do without, we’ve rounded up an insider’s guide to what every dog owner should have.

Towels
Life with dogs is undeniably wonderful and unavoidably messy. From dirty paws to post-rain storm catastrophes, chances are you’ll be faced with a less-than-pristine pet sooner rather than later. Arm yourself for the inevitable by keeping a stash of old towels within easy reach of the entrance that you and your dog use most. In this case, the rattier the towel, the better, since they won’t exactly be doing a glamorous job. Try to keep at least 5 in constant rotation so that you’re never caught off guard. Have a surplus that you aren’t sure what to do with? Donate them to your local pet shelter—they can usually use the extras.

Spare Collar and Leash
It may seem strange to have more than one collar and leash, after all, dogs don’t care about fashion nor do they follow seasonal trends. That being said, collars and leashes are super important and you never want to find yourself without. Always have a backup of each on hand and ensure that the collar has a second set of ID tags on it. That way, if the one that your dog regularly wears gets damaged or lost, you’ll save yourself a rushed trip to the store. A spare leash should be left in the car in case you forget yours and some dog owners like having them on hand in case they see a runaway dog that needs rescuing.

Hand Vac
Get any dog owner talking and the odds are high that they’ll eventually begin to extol the virtues of their hand vac. While you’ll still need to haul out your big machine to do your big cleans, having a handy (pun intended) little tool to deal with quick clean ups is a life-saver. Use it daily to get pet fur off your upholstery, to keep hair and debris from accumulating in corners or on stairs, and to deal with dust and mud tracked in by your favorite little quadruped. It’s worth investing in a model that’s specifically intended for homes with pets, especially if you share your furniture.

Baby Wipes
Whether or not you have a little human running around, baby wipes are one of those things you’ll wonder what you did without after you welcome a dog into your home. They’re indispensable when it comes to doing quick paw wipe downs, for getting food off your dog’s head (trust us, it will happen), for wiping down a toy that’s been left outside, and all of those other little messes that aren’t worth a massive scrub down. Chances are you’ll use them a lot when your dog is a puppy and less as he grows but it’s still smart to keep a package on hand.

Travel Bowl
Not just for campers and backpackers, travel bowls are a great product to keep in your car in order to be prepared for the unexpected. Since they fold down into virtually nothing, they’re easy to stash in a seat-back pouch or tuck in the trunk and they’re an essential part of any roadside emergency kit. Stash a bottle of water alongside your bowl and know that even if you’re stranded on the side of the road in the middle of August, you and your dog are covered.

Natural Cleaning Spray
Dogs explore with their noses and mouths and as a result, they put themselves at risk of ingesting some pretty dangerous things. Make your home safer by keeping a bottle of natural cleaning solution on hand to use when tackling messes that are within your dog’s exploration zone. A simple combination of water and vinegar does a great job at getting your house spotless and you won’t have to worry about potential side-effects if your curious canine licks a recently cleaned area or chews on something that you’ve recently wiped down. It’s a great way to clean your floors which is important because dogs walk on floors and subsequently lick their paws, making harsher cleaning solutions a bad idea.

  1. Don't forget a slow feeder bowl! An underrated pet accessory, helpful for both dogs and cats in slowing down their rate of feeding.
